Dr. S. H. Johnson X-Ray Clinic
Built in 1939
the Dr. Samuel H. Johnson X-Ray Clinic was built in 1939 and served as the clinic location for South Florida’s first African American radiologist. At the time of construction, Dr. Johnson built his clinic because Black residents were not allowed to use the x-ray facilities at Miami’s City Hospital. A mechanical drawing instructor at Booker T. Washington High School, identified only as “Mr. Barker,” created the plans for this small Streamline Moderne building. Notably, national figure Justice Thurgood Marshall is pictured in the X-Ray Clinic meeting with Judge John D. Johnson, Garth C. Reeves, Sr., and Attorney J. E. Graves. Dr. Johnson is the uncle of Black Archives founder, Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields.
