Celebrating a Milestone: The Historic Lyric Theater Receives Its Historic Marker

On March 17, the Historic Lyric Theater, a cornerstone of Miami's cultural heritage, proudly unveiled its new historic marker. This significant event marks a milestone in the theater's storied history, further cementing its status as a beacon of African American culture and history in South Florida.

A Legacy of Cultural Significance

Built in 1913 by Geder Walker, the Lyric Theater quickly became a major entertainment hub for Miami's Black community, earning the district the nickname "Little Broadway." Over the decades, it has hosted a myriad of performances, from vaudeville acts to community events, and has been a symbol of Black economic influence and cultural pride.

The theater's journey from its early days to its current status as the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex is a testament to the resilience and dedication of those committed to preserving its legacy. The unveiling of the historic marker is a recognition of the theater's enduring impact on the community and its role in the cultural tapestry of Miami.

The Unveiling Ceremony

The unveiling ceremony was a momentous occasion, attended by community leaders, historians, and supporters of the arts. The event celebrated not only the theater's rich history but also the efforts of individuals and organizations that have worked tirelessly to preserve its legacy. The historic marker serves as a permanent testament to the theater's significance and its contributions to the cultural and social fabric of Overtown and beyond.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate this achievement, the Black Archives remains committed to honoring the past while looking toward the future. The Historic Lyric Theater continues to serve as a vibrant cultural arts complex, hosting events that engage and inspire the community.
